Doris Ellen Hess, 94, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Auburn died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, in Bethlehem.

She was born on Aug. 30, 1921, in Huntington, Indiana, to Paul and Lucile (Thorne) Howenstine. She was the wife of Roger Adam Hess who died in 1986.

She was a graduate of Clear Creek High School, Manchester College, and St. Francis College. She taught third grade at DeSoto, East Auburn, and McIntosh schools in Auburn, Indiana, before retiring in 1984.

During her life, she assumed leadership roles in the Auburn Garden Club, Auburn Woman’s Club, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Stephens Ministry, and Traditions of Hanover Chorus.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who took pride in the accomplishments of her family. She enjoyed reading, gardening, playing the piano, and entertaining guests in her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Douglas Howenstine and Alan Howenstine.

Survivors include a daughter, Mona, wife of Kenneth Turner, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, daughter Kathy, wife of Frank O’Hare, Gahanna, Ohio; grandchildren, Andrew Turner (Kristen), Denver, Colorado, Molly Stassfurth, (Damian), New Providence, New Jersey, and Abigail Vogel, New Bern, North Carolina; and great-grandchildren, Davis and Grey Stassfurth, and Henry and Owen Turner.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 211 W. Ninth St., Auburn, with the Rev. Dr. Marcus Carlson officiating. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery in Auburn.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center St., Auburn.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Eckert Public Library, 603 S. Jackson St., Auburn, IN 46706.
