I go way back with Cotton, starting when I was the batboy around '46-48 for the Diehl's softball team that played out at the field near the pool. Cotton was the team catcher and one of the prime stir-'em-up team members (and the shortest guy on the team). Even tho I moved away from Garrett after college, Cotton and I stayed in touch over the decades and we had a few tennis matches, which he usually won as he was good. He joined a bunch of the old softball gang for a lunch at the RR Inn about five years ago, a lot of fun. When I was back for a GHS reunion weekend a couple years ago, I visited him over at the Auburn group residence he was living in, so we, as always, had a lively chat with lots of chuckles and look-backs. Memories of Cotton will stay with me for a long time. My best wishes to his family.

Tom,
I'm so glad you had a chance to visit with dad a few years ago. He talked fondly of you and the Diehl's team. A few months ago I had found some articles (like his running into Harold Custer in the outfield) and photos of the Diehl team and had a chance to talk to dad about those days that I didn't know much about. He also still had the photo of the reunion you had at the RR inn. Les Babbitt came to the viewing and we reminisced as well.

What a special time in his life before his children were around so we love hearing the stories. Thank you for sharing with us.

Scott,
Thanks for your comments. I passed Cotton's Clipper obit to another Diehl's ball club member who lives in the Socal area. Harley Hart played 3rd base. Had a chat about Cotten with Les Babbitt, with whom I have regularly communicated over the decades. Wonder if I could get copies of some of those old articles or soft-ball pics? If so, you can see my email address on this web site. Thanks and best regards from a long-time Cotton crony.

So sorry to hear of cotton's passing. He was a very sweet man as I worked with him at the bank. I also visited with him at Smith Farms while he was there. He will surely be missed. Our sincere sympathy.

I had the privilege of meeting Cotton, when I visited Auburn with my fiancé, Todd, who is his nephew. I really enjoyed his stories of his life, and I enjoyed the interaction between he and Todd. He was also tickled to see Todd & I stand together, because we are both so tall! I am so sorry I was unable to get to know him a little better, or accompany Todd to the funeral, but I know he was a blessing to all who knew him, especially his family, and to myself for getting to spend time with him.

Lisa,
I'm so glad you had a chance to meet him. You probably felt like you knew him all his life...he had that special way about him to make you feel like family. I also said, he never met a stranger. Thanks for taking the time to send us this expression of sympathy and in sharing the story of meeting with him.

When I was a little girl in the early fifties and Cotton was married to my cousin, Marlene, I remember him taking us young cousins in his speed boat at Lake Gage. He was a man full of fun and joy. Years later I remember my mother valuing his contributions to the Garrett Centennial Committee. My personal meetings with him were limited as I lived in Indy. But I have always smiled when I thought of him. A good man.

Melanie,
Thank you so much for the stories, thoughts and prayers, We were blessed to have him as a father and your memories of dad are so typical. Ironically, we recently discovered some old slides that I had converted into photos and several are of dad, Marlene and a few others from her family up at the lake with his boat. I've also been in touch with one of Marlene's sister's daughter and it's been a blessing to hear about dad and share photos of a time before we were born.

Love & hugs to Scott, Mike & Tim and their families. I'll be with you on 2/17. Uncle Cotton was so wonderful to me and Mom (Doris). I'll never forget how much he loved us, how he taught me to pray out loud by his example, enjoying sports with him, his "big-boy" and "small boy" basketball goals at your home, his loud and wonderful laugh, special trips to Ocean Village, and how he honored God with his life. He was the only three-time male widower I've ever known, which teaches us we should never give up, even after a tragedy. I am a better person for knowing and loving, and for being loved by, Uncle Cotton.

Todd,
It probably goes without saying how much you meant to dad and on behalf of my brothers, I can't ever thank you enough for constantly thinking of him and visiting with him when you were back in the Auburn area. Dad knew he was loved by many and it was never more visible than when you spent time with him. Thanks.

Terry,
On behalf of my brothers and our families, thanks so much for your kind words. Dad loved to follow your sports career and was proud of the things you accomplished both on and off the court! He didn't mind bragging about the Habig boys!

Again, we appreciate your comments about dad.
