Lester P. Coffman, Jr., 80, passed away Monday, September 4th, 2017 at his home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Les was born August 6, 1937 to Lester and Wilma (Stackpole) Coffman in Sistersville, West Virginia, the older of two children. Les graduated in 1955 from Central High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He pursued studies in aeronautical engineering at the University of Michigan, and met his beautiful bride, Linda, while working one of several part-time jobs he obtained to put himself through school. They married in 1960, and he entered officer training school thereafter, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in 1962. He served our country as a navigator during the Vietnam War. He resigned his commission in 1967, having been promoted to the rank of Captain. After leaving the Air Force, he took a position with the Civil Defense Office with the City of Kalamazoo, Michigan, as the Assistant Director in 1967. In 1969, Les began a long career in airport management. He earned his designation as an Accredited Airport Executive in 1986. He enjoyed the challenges of positions over the years as the Assistant Director at the Kalamazoo Municipal Airport, the Airport Manager at the Erie International Airport, the Commissioner of the Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport, and the Executive Director at the Fort Wayne International Airport. He managed the Fort Wayne Airport until his retirement. Les loved to spend time with his family, and looked forward to their visits. His smile would light up his face when they walked in the door. Les is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Christopher Coffman; and daughter, Carol (Mark) Beber. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nancy Coffman. Services are 1 PM Thursday September 7, 2017 at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center Street, Auburn, IN with Rev Michael Daling officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Auburn. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
