Ruth E. Schaefer, 87, of Auburn, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
She was born Aug. 24, 1930, in Yatesville, Ohio, to the late Isaac A. and Hazel (Stuck) Moats. Ruth was a 1949 graduate of Troy High School in Troy, Ohio, and later graduated with a degree in bookkeeping and accounting from IVY Tech. Ruth also received her license to become a real estate broker.
She married Norman E. Schaefer on Dec. 26, 1949, in Troy, Ohio, and he survives in Auburn.
Ruth started her career working for Troy National Bank as a bookkeeper. She later worked for the American Encyclopedia Company in Chicago, Illinois, as a bookkeeper, Dettmer Hospital in Troy, Ohio, as a switchboard operator and bookkeeper, Hamilton Grove Nursing Home as executive secretary, and co-owned and operated along with her husband, Norman, Senior News in South Bend.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Auburn.
Also surviving are two children, Jeffrey E. (Carol) Schaefer of Piqua, Ohio, and Jill E. (Willard Camm) Kaylor of Findlay, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Evanna M. Schaefer of Portage; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Blankenship, Michael E. Schaefer, Elizabeth Fincel, Angela Mayse, Dana K. Roach, Mary E. Morrow, Jon “Jason” Schaefer, Katherine M. Fanzo, and Eric Schaefer; and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jon E. Schaefer; three brothers, Oriville Moats, Eugene Moats and Robert Moats; and two sisters, Bonnie Hewitt and Pauline Waldren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2018, at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center St., Auburn, with the Rev. Grant Merrell officiating. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery in Auburn.
Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.
