Betty Sue Gengnagel died peacefully in Auburn, Indiana on Thursday morning, November 2nd, 2023. She was one-month shy of her 86th birthday.
Betty Sue was born December 15th, 1937 in Yazoo City, Mississippi.
After graduating from Yazoo City High School in 1955, she matriculated to Mississippi State College for Women and ultimately graduated with a degree in education from the University of Mississippi in 1959. At Ole’ Miss, Betty Sue was a member of the National Honor Society and Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.
Betty Sue met Al Gengnagel working at Yellowstone National park in 1958 and they were soon married and moved back to Auburn in 1960.
Betty Sue taught elementary school in Batesville, Mississippi as well as in Auburn before devoting her life to raise their family.
In her adopted city of Auburn, Betty Sue was an active member of P.E.O, Tri Kappa, and Friends of the Eckhart Public Library. She was also a founding member of the Auburn Presbyterian Church Friends Table. Those that knew Betty Sue will recollect her positivity, devotion to her husband and four children, and her commitment to retain her deep southern accent.
Mrs. Gengnagel is proceeded in death by her parents Bobby and Sue Jones, husband Al Gengnagel, and brother Bobby Jones.
Betty Sue is survived by her daughters Susan Funkhouser (Terry), Stacey Wagler (Tim), Jones Comfort (Andy), Calhoun Jensen (Chad). She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Barclay and Baker Funkhouser, Sydney and Avery Bradley, Sam and Claire Comfort, and Chayse and Kate Jensen.
A memorial service will be held at the Auburn Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4th, 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Betty Sue’s memory can be sent to the Friends Table at Auburn Presbyterian Church or the DeKalb County Humane Society.
