Brenda Carol (Smith) Viers

 It is with both great sadness and profound joy that her family announces the passing of Brenda Carol Viers, 77, of Garrett, Indiana, on Thursday, July 31, 2025. She has gone home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, leaving behind a remarkable legacy and a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.

Brenda Carol Viers was born on Jan. 16, 1948, in Garrett, Indiana.

Affectionately known as “Grandma B” by her 18 grandchildren and the two great-grandchildren she had not met yet, but was very excited to meet, she lived an extraordinary life filled with love, kindness, and dedication to her family. Her friends, former colleagues, and even daughters-in-law called her a “spitfire,” a negative connotation it was not, but an actual observation of her zest for life and for the people she loved every day.

Brenda graduated from Garrett High School in 1966, and later studied and obtained her associate degree in elementary education at Southwest Virginia Community College and later her bachelor's degree in education at Pikeville College in 1986, while living in Grundy, Virginia.

Later in 1987, she moved with her family to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she stayed until 2016. Brenda was also very active in the lives of her boys.

She served in Grand Strand Baptist Church, Red Hats Society, and the local Republican Party while she was in South Carolina.

In 1994 through 2011, she worked and later retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Additionally, she loved playing tourist director when her family from Indiana, came down to visit. Brenda ensured they knew all the great spots to hit when they were in Myrtle Beach and would give detailed directions on the phone for the location of these spots — even if the person on the other line could not see the hand gestures she was making of the exact location.

In 2016, she moved back to her beloved Indiana. She thoroughly enjoyed her later years in Auburn, Indiana, visiting and going out to dinner with her siblings and her sons and their families. She especially loved when her older sons, Brent and Robbie and their families, would take her out for dinner and to run errands. She loved spending time with her children and their families so much in Indiana. The love of her family provided so much comfort to her in her later years.

She was pre-deceased by her wonderful parents, D.O and Betty Smith; her husband of 31 years, William Carson Viers Sr.; her sister, Ethel Ann Smith; and brother, Myron Glenn Smith. She is survived by her four sons, Brent Whan, Robert Whan, Thaddaeus Viers and Bartholomew Viers; and her 18 grandchildren, Taylor, Evan, Jordan, Spencer, Jack, Emmy, Luke, Clara, Jacob, Lindsay, Tristen, Ashton, Cash, Hailey, Sawyer, Jeremiah, Jebediah and Jezuriah; her two great-grandchildren, Ray, and Ameila Ann; her daughters-in-law, Stacey Whan, Melissa Whan, Allison Viers and Veronica Viers. She is also survived by her siblings, Debbie Smith, Timothy Smith, Del Marie Burchardt and David Smith,

A better mother, wife, daughter, sister, grandmother, mother-in-law, and aunt you will not find. Her kindness was shown by loving embraces to everyone and her love was actively demonstrated through prayer. Job 1:21 (KJV)
