Don A Smith

AUBURN, Indiana – Don A. Smith, 86 of Auburn, Indiana passed away at 4:05 p.m., Monday, December 3, 2018, in Auburn. He was born on July 2, 1932 in Corunna, to William H. and Pearl (Elson) Smith. He married Suzanne James in Waterloo on October 18, 1958. Don was a loving husband. He is survived by his wife of sixty years; two daughters, Pamela (Michael) Good of Auburn and Cynthia (Edward) Katter of Fort Wayne; a grandson, Zachary Katter of Fort Wayne; a sister-in-law, Joyce James; nieces and nephews, Rex (Robbin) Metcalf, Sharon (Shawn Kerrick) Cline, Karen Metcalf, Jennifer (Ralph) Grimm, Jill (Bob) Long, Jamye (Skip) Scanlon, Jay (Jen) James, Jeff (Stacy) James, and Julie (Mark) Royce. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Doris Ann Metcalf. Don was a member of the United Methodist Church in Waterloo and sang in the choir for fifty years. After graduating from Waterloo High School, he began working at International Harvester in Fort Wayne in 1951. Don enlisted in the United States Naval Force and served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1952 through 1956. After leaving the Navy, Don returned to International Harvester where he became a mechanic and met many lifelong friends. He retired from International Harvester in 1982 and continued to work on their farm. In 1996, Don and Sue sold their farm and moved to Auburn. He then worked part-time for Big C. Lumber for many years. Don always supported his family and their activities and attended these different events regularly. Vacations were an important part of his life, and family and friends have numerous stories of the adventures during traveling. He served as the secretary of the Fairfield Cemetery for 25 years. Don was an avid member of the DeKalb Flying Models Club from 1993 to 2016. He enjoyed assembling the planes as much as the flight time. Don was a Life Member of the Auburn Conservation Club, the Auburn Legion No. 97 and a lifelong member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 566. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at 2 PM Friday December 7, 2018 at Feller and Clark Funeral Home 1860 Center Street, Auburn with a time of visitation 2 hours prior to the Service Friday from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m.at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date at Fairfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Waterloo United Methodist Church or the Heimach Center (DART) of Auburn.
