Duane L. Grate

Duane L. Grate, age 93 of Garrett, stepped into Heaven on Friday, December 20, 2024 at Astral at Auburn.

Mr. Grate was born on May 27, 1931 in Avilla to Chester and Iris (Foltz) Grate. 

He honorably served his country during the Korean War in the United States Air Force.

Duane married Rose M. Brand on February 8, 1953 in Angola.  She preceded him in death on March 28, 2018.

Mr. Grate worked at the Auburn Foundry for 10 ½ years before working at the Dana Corporation in Auburn for 30 years, retiring in 1994.  He attended the Cedar Creek Church of the Brethren south of Garrett for many years. 

Duane was an avid bowler, bowling two separate 300 games in his lifetime.  He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Duane was a member of the Garrett American Legion Post 178 in Garrett. 

Survivors include:

Daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Rick West of Crossville, Tennessee.

Son and daughter-in-law, Lyle and Missy Grate of Auburn.

Daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Charles Rommel of Minot, North Dakota.

Eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose Grate; grandson, Randall West and a brother, Stanley Grate.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 875 South Wayne Street in Waterloo.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Saturday at the funeral home. 

Burial will take place at the Waterloo Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mr. Grate to the JAM Center, 1200 East Houston Street, Garrett, Indiana 46738.
