Elaine Ellen Kline (née Bowers), 92, of DeKalb County, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and quiet resilience.
Born in Hamilton, Indiana, on November 6, 1932, Elaine was the daughter of Clarence and Helen (Dannells) Bowers. As the valedictorian of the Waterloo High School Class of 1950, she was known for her dedication and talent—playing clarinet, serving as piano accompanist for vocal groups, participating in various school clubs, and working both in the school office and at the Waterloo Dairy.
On November 25, 1950, Elaine married Robert Kline, the love of her life, during the unforgettable Great Appalachian Storm—the so-called “Storm of the Century.” Together they built a life of devotion on their family farm, where Elaine played an equal role in its operation—cultivating a large garden, canning produce, driving tractors, and nurturing a home rich in love, structure, and handmade care.
Her creativity thrived in crochet and needlepoint, and her love for crossword puzzles quietly reflected her sharp wit. Above all, Elaine cherished their family gatherings at Lake Gage, where swimming and togetherness formed memories that continue to live on.
Elaine spent more than six decades seated behind the keys at Maple Grove United Methodist Church as its devoted pianist and organist. Her gentle touch and unwavering dedication were a cherished part of the congregation’s life.
Elaine is survived by her children: Esther (Tom) Smith of Waterloo; Larry (Helen) Kline of Olathe, KS; Brian (Patti) Kline of Waterloo; and Jennifer (Cindy Lauer) Kline of Newnan, GA; her son-in-law, Phil Kish of Solon, OH; sister Janet Gurd of Grand Rapids, MI; ten grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends who were touched by her kindness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; daughter, Catherine Kish; parents, Clarence and Helen Bowers; sister, Patricia Brace; and grandson, Jeremy Kline.
Visitation will be from 3 – 7 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2025, at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 875 S. Wayne St., Waterloo.
