Evellyn "Evie" Esselburn Obituary

Evellyn “Evie” E. Esselburn, age 82, of Garrett passed away on Monday May 27, 2019 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Garrett.

Mrs. Esselburn was born on January 8, 1937 in Montpelier, Ohio to Thomas and Velma (Sloss) Van Fossen.  She was a 1954 graduate of South Side High School in Fort Wayne.

She married Wilford “Bill” V. Esselburn on October 29, 1955 in Fort Wayne.  He preceded her in death on October 25, 2004. 

Mrs. Esselburn worked as an administrative assistant for several different places during her working career.  She worked for Miller’s Merry Manor in Garrett, Mossburg Industries in Garrett, Tri-State University in Angola and the Garrett Utility Department retiring in 2013.  She was also a hairdresser for many years working out of her home and for Schurr Curl in Garrett. 

Evie was a member of the Altarstar United Methodist Church in Auburn.  She served as a lay minister for the surrounding United Methodist Churches when she was needed.   She served as the director of the Garrett Christmas Bureau for many years and she was a member of the Sigma Phi Gamma and the Delta Rho sororities.  She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the Garrett American Legion Auxiliary.  She served as the Garrett representative to the Heimach Center for seniors in Auburn and she was a longtime volunteer for the national MS walk.    

Survivors Include:

Son; Michael Esselburn of Hamilton.

Son and daughter-in-law; Neal and Mary Esselburn of Fort Wayne.

Son and daughter-in-law; Thomas and Tae-Sun Esselburn of Griffin, Georgia.

Foster son and daughter-in-law; Glen and Kitty Hawkins of Mechanicsville, Virginia.

6 grandchildren and their spouses; Anne Esselburn, Theresa and Trevor Moe, Michelle and Chad Wood, Brett and Sarah Esselburn, Kyle and Jessica Esselburn and Wilford “Billy” and Wendy Esselburn.

12 great grandchildren.

Brother; Max Van Fossen of Jacksonville, Florida.

Sister; Marillyn Oxender of West Unity, Ohio.

Several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Bill Esselburn, daughter-in-law; Patricia Esselburn and one brother; Lawrence Van Fossen.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 31, 2019 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at the Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 South Center Street in Auburn.  A Delta Rho sorority service will be held at 7:00 PM.  Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service from 11:00 to 12:00 noon on Saturday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 12:00 noon at the Feller and Clark Funeral Home in Auburn with Pastor Bret Stevens officiating. 

Burial will take place in the Cedar Creek Cemetery in Garrett.
