Gary Hillabrand Obituary

Gary D. Hillabrand, 88, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2024 at Parkview Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.

He was born on Sept. 4, 1935 to Carroll and Helen Hillabrand in Findlay, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his most beloved wife, Jeane (Personnette) Hillabrand, his sons, Herb Hillabrand and Jon Hillabrand.

He is survived by his 3 brothers: Nick (Beverly) of Indian River, MI, Richard (Sharron) of Findlay, OH, and Van (Cheryl) of Pike Road, AL.

He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Jeri Hillabrand of Auburn, IN, 6 grandchildren: Chelsea, Cory, Alex, Paul, Nicole, Weston, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Gary’s family moved to Plymouth, IN when he was in the 8th grade. His first job was selling popcorn at the Reece theatre. He was very proud of his first car, a 1940 black Ford which he purchased for $600. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1953 and he went on to Ball State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education, graduating in 1957. On June 1, 1958, he married Jeane and they lived in Morenci, MI where he taught for 2 years before relocating to Attica, IN. In Attica they rented a little house on the golf course for $50 a month and made many lifelong friends while there. He taught school and coached a 6 man football team. In 1964 he moved Jeane and Herb to Auburn, IN where he remained until his passing. He taught Accounting and Business for 3 years at Auburn High School and then 28 years at DeKalb High School. He also helped as assistant football coach for all but 3 games. The story was that for those 3 games he was the head coach because the prior head coach had quit with 3 games to go. Gary also taught Driver’s Education in the summers. (Fun fact: Gary was Herb’s football coach and Jeri’s driver’s ed teacher.) He completed his master’s degree from Ball State.

Gary retired from teaching in 1995. He began his second career in 1999 with the DeKalb County Circuit Court as bailiff. He served under 3 different judges and had moved on to the DeKalb Superior Court II for the last 6 of his 13 years of serving as bailiff.

Gary was passionate about many things, but his wife was at the top of his list, followed by children and grandchildren. He also loved gardening, fishing, reading, Ohio State and Notre Dame (as long as they weren’t playing against each other), spending time with family and friends and keeping holiday traditions. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, serving in different capacities.

Viewing will be at Feller & Clark Funeral Home in Auburn on Wednesday, March 13th from 12:00 to 2:00 with the service starting at 2:00 followed by the burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials for Gary may be given to his church, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 211 W. 9th St., Auburn IN 46706.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
