Hal Frazier Ells, 82, of Auburn, Indiana, went to be with his Lord and Savior, on Monday, Dec. 30, 2024, at Parkview DeKalb Hospital in Auburn.
He was born on March 18, 1942, in Wauseon, Ohio, to George Augustus Ells and Ruth Leona (Apt) Ells.
Hal was proud to be a veteran of the United States Air Force, 1710 Aerial Port Squadron. Hal remained active in veteran activities.
Hal served as an officer in the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department in the late ’80s, into the ’90s.
Hal was a warm and engaging guy. Although private, he was always friendly to those around him. Whether it was at a restaurant, at his apartment community, he always gave a friendly and sometimes sassy greeting. A lover of a good chili, Hal never passed up a homemade baked good. He knew his way around the kitchen and the grill.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, DeEtte and Steve Deweese, of Columbus, Ohio; three granddaughters, Lydia Deweese, Evelyn Deweese and Sophie (Ryan) Fordyce; and two great-grandchildren, Colt Walker Fordyce and Ada Jean Fordyce.
A special gratitude to his nieces Nancy Hart and Julie Thomas, who were instrumental to his care and ability to stay in his apartment in his last years. Also, many thanks to the caregivers from the NE Indiana Aging and In-Home Services. And of course, the Veterans Hospital, and Parkview DeKalb emergency room and staff.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Allen Ells; and four siblings, George (Dorothy) Ells Sr., Wealthea (Harold) Martin, John (Kaye) Ells and Nancy Miramont. Hal is the last member of his generation to pass.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m., on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center St., Auburn, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Craig officiating.
Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in St. Joe, with Military Honors conducted by the United States Air Force and American Legion Post 97 of Auburn.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., on Saturday, April 26, 2025, prior to the service at the funeral home.
