Herbert L. Leins

Herbert L. Leins, age 87 of Fort Wayne and formerly of Auburn, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2025 at StoryPoint North in Fort Wayne.

He was born on September 21, 1937 in Fairfield Township, DeKalb County to Lesla and Esther May (Freed) Leins.  He was a 1957 graduate of Waterloo High School.

Herb honorably served his country for 12 years as a member of the Indiana Air National Guard from 1955 to 1967, leaving with rank of Staff Sergeant.  He was elevated to active duty from 1961 to 1962 during the Berlin Crisis and was deployed to serve at a former WWII base at Chambley-Bussières, France. 

He married his high school sweetheart, Carole Sebert on May 25, 1958 in Waterloo.  She resides in Fort Wayne. 

Herb retired from the Dana Corporation in Auburn, which later became Eaton, in 2000 after 30 years of service.  He also enjoyed working at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg car auctions over the Labor Day weekend for several years.

He loved to play in Dana’s golf and bowling leagues.  He also loved to travel visiting 48 of the 50 states as well as Canada, the Caribbean and six European Countries, several more than once.  During their younger years, they also enjoyed spending summers on Lake Gage with Carole’s family.  He and Carole were also DeKalb Baron season ticket holders and were loyal and devoted Baron Followers.  They were avid Luke Recker fans as well as all of Bob Knight’s basketball teams.

His wife of 67 years, Carole Leins of Fort Wayne.

Sister, Doris Merrick of Blue Springs, Missouri.

Sister-in-law, Dorothy “Dottie” Leins of Auburn.

Sister-in-law, Jean Rinehold of Auburn.

Sister-in-law, Linda Madden of Auburn.

Many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Herb is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Iris Haskins; brother, Eldon Leins and brother, Lesla “Junior” Leins.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 South Center Street in Auburn.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Ralph Diehl officiating.

Burial with military honors will take place at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Auburn.
