Janice Gnagy Obituary

Janice Carol Gnagy, lovingly known as “Grandma Jan” and “Gigi,” 88, of Hamilton, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by love on May 17, 2026. Born on April 13, 1938, Jan lived a life rooted in faith, grace, family, community, and service to others.

Jan was the kind of woman who left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was elegant yet humble, deeply compassionate, fiercely devoted to her family, and always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Whether through her friendships, community involvement, or simply the way she made people feel loved and welcomed, she carried a light that touched countless lives.

A lifelong servant to her community, Jan dedicated much of her life to giving back through her church, local organizations, and charitable involvement. She was a proud sister of the Phi Psi Ro Sorority for over 56 years and an active member of Daughters of the Nile, where she formed many treasured friendships and contributed countless hours supporting others.

Jan and her beloved husband, Jim Gnagy, owned and operated Hamilton Lake Marine for over 50 years, becoming a well-known and respected part of the Hamilton Lake community. Together, they built not only a successful business, but a life centered around family, friendship, and serving those around them. Jan also cherished life on Hamilton Lake, where she resided for more than 40 years and created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and memories for generations of family and friends.

Above all else, Jan treasured her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt whose greatest joy came from the people she loved most. Known affectionately as Grandma Jan, she created a legacy of warmth, strength, kindness, and unwavering love that will continue through generations.

She is survived by her children, Tamara Mathers & Mike Word and Ronald Mathers; stepson Brad and Sarah Gnagy; her grandchildren, Elaine & Andrew Anderson, Damian Dowell, Ian Mathers, Steven Mathers, Graham and Carmen Gnagy; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Xavier Mathers, Collin Mathers, Noah Dowell, Teegan Reed, Xalynn Dowell, Luna Dowell, and Greyson Anderson.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Elvin and Irenus Camp; former husband and father of her two children, Tamara and Ronald, William “Bill” Mathers who passed away in 2020, husband, Bill Seiss who passed away in 1979, and husband, Jim Gnagy who passed away in 2023; her stepson, Jeff Gnagy; her stepdaughter, Kim Gnagy; her twin sister, Janet Pape; and her eight biological brothers and sisters and parents of the Valenti family, all of whom she held close to her heart throughout her life.

Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing Jan lived a beautiful and meaningful life filled with love, faith, friendship, and devotion to others. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing her.
