Garrett – Jerry Weldon Custer, 81 of Garrett passed away Thursday December 18, 2025.
He was born July 9, 1944 in Garrett. His parents were Junior Weldon and Phyllis (Foltz) Custer. They have both passed away.
Jerry was a graduate of Garrett High School and the Fort Wayne Police Academy.
He was a US Army veteran and served the City of Garrett for 35 years and 1 day as a police officer. He was a patrolman, K-9 handler, Sargent, Captain, and Chief for 13 ½ years. After his retirement from the police department on July 10, 2006 he spent 17 years working in the Garrett School System in a number of various positions. He was an instructor and guest speaker for college classes, seminars and new recruits for Drug, crime scene and occult investigation process.
Jerry was a Scout Master in the Boy Scouts, coached Garrett boys’ baseball and coached Garrett girls’ softball. He was one of the original members of Rhythm Rods and worked as a ring man for Mathews Auctioneers. In 1987 he was named Garrett Citizen of the year.
He was a member of Garrett Elks Lodge, Garrett VFW, Garrett American Legion, Garrett Eagles Lodge, FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) and Shifters Car Club.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lois (Johnson) Custer. They were married in Garrett on August 28, 1999.
Jerry had a blended family with 5 sons, a daughter and their spouses, Ted and Diane Custer of Corunna, Tim and Tanya Custer of Auburn, Tara and Thomas Smurr of Garrett, James P and Tracy Miller of Anderson, Michael C. and Lynne Miller of Fort Wayne and Eric H. and Trisha Van Buskirk of Garrett; 14 grandchildren, Christie, Samantha, J.W., David Michael, Eric Steven, Ashtyn, Maggi, Maya, Mason, Ryleigh, Alex, Adalyn, Ethan and Addison.
Services will be at 11 AM Saturday December 27, 2025 at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center Street, Auburn, IN with burial to follow the service in Cedar Creek Cemetery, Auburn. Visitation is Friday from 2 to 7 Pm and also 1 hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 AM Saturday all at the funeral home.
