Joseph Tompkins Obituary

Joseph M. Tompkins, age 65, of Hines, Illinois passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2021 in Illinois.

He was born on July 3, 1955 in Fort Wayne to Clarron and Margaret (O’Conner) Tompkins.  He was a 1974 graduate of DeKalb High School.

Mr. Tompkins honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. 

He worked for Dana Corporation in Angola retiring in 1979 due to a disability.  He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Waterloo, the American Legion Post 80 in Donnor’s Grove, Illinois, Disable American Veterans (DAV), Paralyzed Veterans of America, American Veterans (AMVETS) and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. 

Joe competed in Paralympic shooting traveling all over and winning several medals. He loved rolls from Foltz Bakery in LaGrange and racing his wheelchair.  He was also an avid coin collector. 

Survivors include: 

Brother and sister-in-law; C. “Patrick” and Sandy Tompkins of Hudson.

Brother and sister-in-law; David and Becky Tompkins of Indian Pass, Florida.

His twin brother; George Tompkins of LaFollette, Tennessee.

Sister-in-law; Becky and Pat Mitchell of Wolcottville.

Many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers; Stephen Tompkins and Vincent Tompkins. 

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2021 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 875 South Center Street in Waterloo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February, 18, 2021 at 1:00 PM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 1098 County Road 39, Waterloo, Indiana with Fr. Vincent Joseph, VC officiating.

Burial will take place at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Waterloo.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.

Per the Governor Holcomb’s mandate, face coverings and social distancing will be required.
