Lewis Erwin Obituary

Lewis “Gene” Erwin Sr., 84, of Auburn and formerly of Pleasant Lake, passed away Friday, March 29, 2024, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

He was born August 9, 1939, in Helmer, Indiana to George “Russell” and Blanche M. (Favourite) Erwin.  He was a 1957 graduate of Pleasant Lake High School.

Gene was a veteran of the United States Navy serving from 1957 to 1960.

He married Sharon K. McClish on December 21, 1957, in Pleasant Lake, Indiana.

He worked for Moore Business Forms as plant controller, retiring after 34 years of service. He then went to work for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier, retiring in 2004 after 10 years of service.

Gene was a member of the Fairview Missionary Church in Angola.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 97 of Auburn. Gene also enjoyed being a Ham Radio operator and his call sign was KX9V. Gene was a baseball fan and the Chicago Cubs were his favorite team.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Sharon K. Erwin of Auburn; five children, Lonnie J. Teeple of Berne, Vonda L. Hershberger, and her husband, Steve of Lacy Springs, Alabama, Janice M. Lanning of Angola, Darlene K. Chapman, and her husband, Jim of Huntertown, and Lewis Gene Erwin Jr., and his wife, Sue of Pleasant Lake; 11 grandchildren, Aaron Hershberger, Jeremy Hershberger, Bethany Sweet, Jimmy Chapman, Jaycee Chapman, Dartanyon Chapman, Alyssa Erwin, Nathan Erwin, Zach Teeple, Tabatha Lanning and Caitlin Lanning; two great grandchildren, Wesley and Paisley, and twin girls due in April; and a brother, Charles R. Erwin of Columbia City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Virginia Witte, Georgia Jarrett and Phyllis Lytle; and two brothers, Stanley Erwin and Lyal Erwin.

A graveside service will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Hillside Cemetery, 5147 US Highway 27, Pleasant Lake, with Pastor Norm Fuller officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the Pleasant Lake Baptist Church.
