Rebecca Haynes-Bordas, age 78 of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away January 2, 2026. She leaves a legacy of service, education, and dedication to her community.
Rebecca was an experienced teacher and coach who brought a talent for setting and meeting goals to every role she held. She devoted much of her professional life to public education through the Virginia Cooperative Extension, where she managed the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). In this role, she taught community-based programs focused on food, nutrition, and food safety, helping individuals and families build healthier lives.
She later worked with Purdue Cooperative Extension, where she contributed to the development of community-based programs in family resource management. Rebecca’s work reflected her deep commitment to empowering others through practical knowledge and supportive guidance.
In 1998, Rebecca married Al Bordas, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Ruth Haynes.
Rebecca is survived by her sisters, Sarah Sweitzer, Karen Shankster, and Anita Knechel, along with their families. She is also survived by her aunt and uncle, Dave and Mary Wolf.
A private memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
Interment will take place at Christian Union Cemetery in Garrett, Indiana.
