Hamilton – Robert Dale Hamman, 98, formerly of Hamilton passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025, at his home at Story Point in Fort Wayne.
Robert (Bob) was born February 15, 1927, in Hamilton to Otis C. and Bernice (Zigler) Hamman. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1945 and then from the Industrial Training Institute (Chicago).
Bob is a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country in World War II. He met his wife of 76 years upon his return from World War II and the rest is history. Bob and Donna Gene Oberlin were married on December 4, 1948, during a ceremony at the Hamilton Methodist Church where they were members.
Bob served his community in a variety of ways during the 50 years that he and his wife, Donna, owned and operated Hamman Electric as well as during retirement. In addition to doing HVAC, electrical, and plumbing service work, Bob served as custodian and bus driver for Hamilton Community Schools for 18 years.
Bob held numerous offices in the Hamilton Methodist Church as well as in the Hamilton Lions Club. In 2013 he received the W.P. Woods Award from Lions International which is given to a Lion who is held in high esteem. In recognition of his military service, Bob was privileged to take the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. on November 11, 2009.
Bob was a charter member of the Hamilton Franklin R. Fee American Legion Post 467 and held several offices within that organization. He helped to develop the Gnagy Park facility, which is widely used by people in the town he loved. Bob served on the Hamilton volunteer fire department for many years. Bob believed in, and enjoyed, his time with community volunteer work but especially loved to be with his family. He loved boating and teaching his kids to water ski on Hamilton Lake. Bob loved to travel but his three favorite trips were to the Outer Banks with the entire family. During retirement, many hours were spent on his stained glass “hobby” where he made beautiful wall hangings, miniature buildings and other pieces of art.
Bob’s family includes two sons and one daughter: David (Sherrill) Hamman of Fort Wayne, Richard (Lori) Hamman of Fort Wayne and Karen (Bob) Lehman of Lakeview, Ohio. He is grandfather to nine: Shawn (Michael) Morris of Fort Wayne, Ryan (Christin) Hamman of Fort Wayne, Nicole (Bryan) Heiserman of Columbus, Ohio, Danielle (Brad) Carman of Columbus, Ohio, Austin Hamman of Fort Wayne, Adam (Morgan) Hamman of Fishers, IN, Alicia Hamman (fiancé, Brad George) of Fort Wayne, Gavin (Olivia) Heiserman of Columbus, Ohio and Haley Heiserman of Columbus, Ohio. Bob is great-grandfather to eight: Tyler Morris, Aleena Hamman, Jayden Hamman, Beckett Hamman, Amelia Carman, Vivian Carman, Asher Hamman and Mac Hamman. He’s also survived by two sisters-in-law, Donna Oberlin of Hamilton and Deloris Hamman of Springfield, MO.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, and four brothers -- Denver, Gerald, Homer and Jerry Hamman.
