Robert J. Smith

Robert J. Smith, 87, of Hudson, passed peacefully on March 13, 2024.

He was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. His grace will be missed.

Bob held a Master of Social Work degree. He was a community leader throughout his work as a social worker in Fort Wayne, IN. Bob touched many lives. He was one of the original founders and served on the Board of Directors of SCAN. He served as Assistant Director of the Welfare Department and was Assistant Director of Lutheran Social Services. Bob was involved with Matthew 25 and St. Mary’s Soup kitchen. When Bob moved to Lansing, Michigan he served as the Director of Catholic Charities for the Lansing Diocese. His work and life will be remembered for years to come.

Bob was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in rural Waterloo.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Barbara Smith; brother, Thomas (Ann) Smith; daughter, Sarah Nelson; son, Gregory (Anna) Smith; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at noon Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1098 C.R. 39, Waterloo, with Father Levi Nkwocha officiating.

Burial will take place at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. – noon Wednesday, March 20, 2024, prior to the service at the church.
