Steven Lloyd Hathaway (“Big Steve”), 67, passed away on February 2, 2026, at Indiana University Health University Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born on August 1, 1958, in Garrett, Indiana, to Charles and Beverly (Aldrich) Hathaway.
Steve was a 1976 graduate of Garrett High School. He married Mary A. (Kain) Hathaway in 1977 in Auburn, Indiana.
Steve served on the Garrett City Council and retired as a groundsman for the City of Garrett. He was known for being a great cook and for his love of watching the Green Bay Packers, Garrett High School sports, and DeKalb Performing Arts, especially when his grandchildren, great‑nieces, and great‑nephews were involved.
He is survived by his wife, Mary A Hathaway, sons, Ryan (Amanda) Hathaway and Tyler (Jennifer) Hathaway; his grandchildren, Nolan, Halle (Damien Drake), Isabelle, Ella, Macie, and Porter Hathaway; his brother, Charles (Carol) Hathaway; his sister Roxanne (Danny) Rutkowski; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He also leaves behind his close friend Keith Platter, whom he considered a brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister and brother‑in‑law, Rhonda and Greg Haynes.
A private celebration of life will be held for immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Steve’s honor to the Fair Haven Foundation, 1702 W. 16th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202‑2031, or to Garrett Athletics or DeKalb Performing Arts.
