Butler – Vernis Handshoe, 80 passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at Auburn Village Nursing and Rehabilitation in Auburn.
He was born March 10, 1946 in Garrett to John and Sarah (Sheperd) Handshoe.
Vernis was a 1964 graduate of Garrett High School.
He worked at International Harvester in Fort Wayne, was a School Bus Driver for DeKalb Eastern Schools, worked for the Auburn Street Department and retired in 2009 after 21 years as a Truck Driver for the DeKalb County Highway Department. He was also a lifetime farmer.
Vernis enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved his cat Spike.
He married Kayota Reinhart on July 14, 1967 in Garrett and she survives in Butler.
Also surviving are a son and daughter, Almond D Handshoe of Butler and Tonya L Liberty of Butler; grandson Bryce Liberty and his fiancé, Kirstie Sheets; granddaughter, Haleigh Groves and her husband Ian; 2 brothers, Edgil Handshoe of Baggs Wyoming, Delmar Handshoe and his wife Sandra of Garrett; sister, Alice F. Martin of Garrett; sister-in-law, Nancy Handshoe of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Wanda Handshoe, 3 brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilkie and Betty Handshoe, Clyde Handshoe, Carl and Shirley Handshoe, Lucy Handshoe and a brother-in-law, Charles “Cork” Martin.
A Memorial Service will be 3 PM Monday, June 15, 2026 at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center Street, Auburn, IN. The family will receive friends for 3 hours prior to the service from noon to 3 PM at the funeral home. Memorials can be given in memory of Vernis to the DeKalb County Humane Shelter.
