Walter S Smith Jr

St. Joe – Walter S Smith Jr, 80, of St. Joe, passed away Friday, July 31, 2026 at Stillwater Hospice in Fort Wayne.

He was born April 18, 1946 in Olney, Illinois to Walter S and Charlotte J (Beck) Smith Sr. His parents and a sister, Joyce Farrington have passed away.

Walter was a 1964 Graduate of Garrett High School and was a US Army Veteran.

He worked at General Electric in Fort Wayne, Magnavox in Auburn, Auburn Gear in Auburn and Dura in Butler before retiring in 2006.

He was a raised as a Baptist and was a member of the Butler American Legion. He was an antique car buff.

Walter married Marilyn “Jeanne” Helbert on February 21, 1969 in Garrett and she survives.

Also surviving are 2 sons and a daughter, Eric P (Kathy Brown) Smith of Waterloo, Kris A (Mandi) Smith of Auburn and Jaclyn D (Tony) Martinez of Fort Wayne; 5 grandchildren, Tori (Keen Saralu) Smith, Gage (Georgia) Smith, Morgan Smith, Sophie (Alexa) Martinez, Sarah Martinez and a great grandson, Niko Saralu; a sister, Dorothy M Dell of Fort Wayne.

A Memorial Service will be at 2 PM, Thursday, August 6, 2026 at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center Street, Auburn, IN 46706 with burial to follow the service in Woodlawn Cemetery, Auburn. The family will receive friends and relatives 2 hours prior to the service from noon to 2 Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials can be given in memory of Walter to the DeKalb County Humane Shelter.
