So glad I made it to the viewing tonight and got to speak to each of you girls. Deepest sympathies for your loss. So glad I knew your family. We lived on the wrong side of the road so Matt and Faye never got to ride his bus, but when I posted on Facebook, this was daughter Faye's response:
He was such a wonderful man! Great memories visiting his house a few times when we lived on the county line. He was like an extra grandpa that lived so close. We lived on the wrong side of the road so Matt and Faye never got to ride his bus

Dear Porter Family, my deepest sympathy to all of you. I met Don through Tom Frank. He was a very nice man...but a little ornery too. May God provide you with strength & comfort during this difficult time. Rest in peace Don.

My family was the last stop on Don Porter's bus route, which means we got to spend lots of time with him every day -- across Tonkel Road, past the County Line cheese factory, through the dip on Amstutz that flooded after lots of rain -- no stops for miles until we got back into Leo territory, but somehow with Don as our driver and WMEE on the radio, that was OK. That bus route ran right around Don's own farm, and that made it seem like we were part of his neighborhood. I always tried to sit right behind Don's driver seat, and we would wiggle fingers at each other across the seats. How did you know Don was a terrific man? Because his rear-view mirror was always ringed with kids' school pictures. Everybody wanted to share their pictures with Don. He was kind and gentle and always got us safely to and from school. Thank you, Don, for your service and kindness to the kids of Leo in your care over the years.

This wonderful man was my bus driver through most of elementary and middle school and again when I was coaching volleyball at Leo. His kind words and heart will be missed. I always enjoyed having a conversation with Don when I would run into him around Leo. My thoughts and prayers with your family. He will most certainly be missed and lived a life worth emulating.

Don was a sweet, kind man who always had a smile on his face. He came to our house for many years as our bus driver. God bless him and his family.
